The New York, New Haven & Hartford's tunnel through the east side of Providence, Rhode Island, was completed in 1908 and was used by the New Haven's all-electric commuter subsidiary, the Providence, Warren & Bristol Railroad. The tunnel connected with Providence's original Union Station and was 5,080 feet long with a roof made of reinforced concrete. Electric power was removed in 1934. The hurricane of 1938 damaged the tunnel and reduced it to freight-only service on a single track. The last freight train passed through the tunnel in 1981 and stands abandoned today.
