Riding the Red Cars

In this modern card, a famous Pacific Electric "Red Car" is seen running along a section of the line's railroad right-of-way. Begun in 1901 as the Pacific Electric Railway Company, it was eventually merged with the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1911. Serving the Los Angeles area, the Pacific Electric was the first interurban railroad to introduce the crossing signal known as the "wigwag" that was later adopted by other railroads across the country.
