The '400', Chicago & Northwestern Line

As Lucius Beebe once wrote about the fierce competition for St. Paul, Minneapolis and Chicago passenger traffic calling it 'bare knuckle'. The Chicago & Northwestern ran its famous '400' against the Milwaukee Road's 'Hiawatha'. The '400' began its run in 1935 and made the 400 mile trip between Chicago and the Twin Cities in 400 minutes. Here is a complete collection of both steam and diesel railroad-issued postcards depicting the comfort and style enjoyed by passengers as they watched the scenery sliding by along their way. First, we'll look at the steam set from the 1930s. For more information on the '400', click Here.

In 1939, the first EMD E3A diesel locomotives were introduced and here is the complete diesel set from that period.
