The Challenger

Nicknamed the "Everybody's Limited", the Union Pacific Railroad, in partnership with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, and then, later, with The Milwaukee Road, operated a well-patronized passenger run between Chicago and California for over ten years. "The Challenger" was introduced in 1935 during the Great Depression when traveling was then too expensive for most and offered the typical name-train accommodations and amenities that almost any traveler could afford. With Pullman, coach, and dining car service, "The Challenger" connected passengers with a route from Chicago to Los Angeles and, over the Southern Pacific rails, on to San Francisco. Here are both black & white and color period postcards advertising the many amenities to be enjoyed while enroute to the West onboard.  For more information on "The Challenger", click Here..
