The Union Station in Toledo was a regular stop for the New York Central's Lake Shore Limited. Running between Chicago, Boston (via the Boston & Albany Railroad) and New York, it is seen here at station, the passenger train on the right. Postmarked Toledo 1912.
The locomotives might well be Vauclain Compounds, top cylinder does look larger than the bottom on each of them. That would put this in a relatively narrow range around 1905. Vauclain Compounds were a not a success, in practice they tended to leak steam and require significantly more maintenance than more conventional arrangements. Most were converted to simple steam.
