A Passenger "Extra" Through Niles Canyon, California

In the circa 1910 postcard below, we see a Southern Pacific Railroad passenger train crossing through Niles Canyon near Fremont, California. The line was built by the Central Pacific Railroad in order to complete the western part of its transcontinental railroad and was part of the original extension from Sacramento to San Francisco Bay. Completed in 1869, the route was leased to the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1885. Note the low-mounted markers lights and the white "extra train" flags on the front of the locomotive.
