Railroading in the Catskills

This card is a bit of a mystery and gives us a terrific view of a train, very likely on the standard gauge Ulster & Delaware Railroad, in the Catskill Mountains of New York. The train is passing through a narrow pass known as Stony Clove Notch and is postmarked 1906. The unusual part of this scene are the flat cars loaded with narrow gauge passenger cars. The Catskills were served by both standard gauge and and a handful of narrow gauge railroads and the passenger car load may have been on its way to the Delaware & Eastern Railroad, a narrow gauge line incorporated in 1904.

  1. You know your postcards and trains! Thanks for pointing out the detail of the passenger cars on flatbeds--I wouldn't of noticed!
