Shay Locomotives

The Shay geared locomotive was a familiar sight on many logging railroads. Ephraim Shay, a Michigan logger, built his own narrow gauge railroad in order to get logs to the mill instead of hauling them on sleds. He invented and patented  a geared steam locomotive that were later built by Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio.  In the circa 1910 card below, we see an early prototype on Shay's own railroad. Ephraim Shay may very well be the gentleman behind the cab wearing a straw hat. The other views from this period show  later locomotives hard at work heading up log trains. For information on the Shay locomotive, click Here.
