Hawthorne, New Jersey

In this circa 1906 view, a New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad passenger local prepares to stop at the small Hawthorne, New Jersey station. Built in 1894, it replaced the original structure that had burned down in 1893. This two-room station included a passenger waiting room, the agent's office area, and a freight and baggage section. The station still stands today. In 2010, the building needed to be moved further back from the busy main street, Diamond Bridge Avenue, the dirt road in the card's foreground.

In the two photographs below, taken by my father in the circa 1960, we see the station prior to the end of passenger service. Note the proximity of the station to the streets.
